In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt, who succeeded the assassinated William McKinley, was elected to a term as the nation's chief executive in his own right as he defeated Democrat Alton B. Parker. . . . In 1932, New York Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated the incumbent, Herbert Hoover, for the presidency. . . . In 1960, Massachusetts Sen. John F. Kennedy defeated Vice President Richard M. Nixon for the presidency. . . . In 1966, Ronald Reagan was elected governor of California. . . . In 1988, Vice President George Bush won the presidential election, defeating Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis. . . .

FOR RAILROAD BUFFS -- The Salamanca Rail Museum Association sent a reminder that its 2005 calendar featuring area railroads and equipment from the past can be ordered by mail by sending a check or money order for $4 payable to the Salamanca Rail Museum, 170 Main St., Salamanca, N.Y. 14779, or purchased at the museum's gift shop for $3.

The publication, now in its 25th year, was prepared by using materials from the archives of the museum and other sources. Railroads in the calendar include the Erie Railroad, the Buffalo Rochester & Pittsburgh Railway, the Baltimore & Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroads. Locations include Salamanca, Olean, Jamestown, Springville and Elma, and Bradford, Pa., and Whistletown, Pa.

"GIGANTIC" is the word used to describe the St. Stephen Serbian Orthodox Church of Lackawanna bake sale from 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 11. Most of the sales will be by "pre-order" for the coming holidays and will feature nut rolls, torte rolls and homemade cookies.

Deadline for ordering is Dec. 1. Walk-ins at the church, 177 Weber Road, will be welcome and phone orders can be placed by calling 646-1028, 824-8258 or 822-3724. For information, call 822-2593. . . .

SPAGHETTI DINNERS featuring "original homemade spaghetti sauce" and meatballs will be served "promptly" at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Polish Falcons Hall, 445 Columbia Ave., Depew, by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Polish Falcons.
