Repairs to the East Avenue veterans monument are nearing completion, but the city decided Friday against having a rededication ceremony Thursday, Veterans Day, as it had hoped.
Mayor Michael W. Tucker said the fear of bad weather and commitments by local veterans organizations led him to put the ceremony off until Memorial Day.
"A lot of these guys are older. Looking at the long-range forecast, it's not that good," Tucker said. "It's a busy day for these guys. They go from place to place laying wreaths, and then they go the cemetery and lay a wreath, and it takes up their whole morning."
The Common Council last week approved a bond issue of up to $80,000 to pay for the work, on a contract awarded last month to Surface Solutions of the Town of Lockport.
Tucker said the marble blocks around the base of the monument are being caulked and need some time to set. He said two of the four bronze eagles are "in very bad repair," and there would be straw around the base.
