Ken Darby ran for 200 yards on 36 carries to lead Alabama to a 30-14 win over Mississippi State, spoiling Bulldogs coach Sylvester Croom's homecoming.

The Crimson Tide (6-3, 3-3 Southeastern Conference) avoided an embarrassing upset led by the man who nearly became the coach in Tuscaloosa.

Croom's Bulldogs (3-6, 2-4), 17-point underdogs, were still flirting with a third straight win midway through the fourth quarter. Instead, they wound up losing their 13th straight SEC West game.

Ted Ginn Jr. had three TDs as Ohio State (6-3, 3-3) took a 32-19 Big Ten win over Michigan State (4-5, 3-3). Jehuu Caulcrick (Clymer) rushed nine times for 33 yards for Michigan State.

It was a tough afternoon for Nebraska's Sandro DeAngelis (St. Joe's) in a 34-27 loss at Iowa State. DeAngelis missed a 24-yard field goal attempt wide left and had a 33-yard attempt blocked in the second quarter, then had an extra point blocked in the final quarter. Both teams are 5-4, 3-3.

Corvair Harge (Sweet Home) rushed for a Northeast Conference record 331 yards and five TDs as Central Connecticut (7-2, 5-1) scored a 38-28 win over Stony Brook (2-7, 2-5).

Ryan Kuhn threw for 135 yards and a TD to give Cornell (3-5, 3-2) a 14-7 Ivy League win over Dartmouth (0-8, 0-5).

Chris Brown passed for 318 yards and two touchdowns to lead Colgate (6-3, 3-1) to a 22-19 win over Lafayette (6-3, 3-1) in the Patriot League.

Stafford Owens scored on a 21-yard pass from Ryan Hawk in overtime, giving Ohio (4-6, 2-5) a 17-16 win over Central Florida (0-9, 0-6) in the Mid-American Conference.

Andrew Wellock's 24-yard field goal in the fourth overtime sent Eastern Michigan (4-5, 4-2) to a wild 61-58 win over Central Michigan (3-6, 2-4).

Omar Jacobs threw four TD passes as Bowling Green (7-2, 5-1) coasted to a 52-0 win over Western Michigan (1-8, 0-6).
