SHERIFF IS INDEED MANDATED TO PROVIDE POLICE SERVICES

In the past few weeks, a number of public officials have been quoted in the media plainly stating that the office of sheriff is not mandated to provide police services. Those statements are not correct. The State County Law defines the duties of the sheriff. Among other duties, the law requires that "The sheriff shall perform the duties prescribed by law as . . . the conservator of the peace within the county." The law is clear, the sheriff is mandated to provide police services.

The citizens of our communities deserve to be provided with accurate information in these important matters.
