Members of the 914th Airlift Wing who served in the Iraq war will receive medals at ceremonies today at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.
Maj. Gen. James D. Bankers, commander of the 22nd Air Force, based in Atlanta, will present decorations to local reservists, along with Col. James B. Roberts, commander of the 914th.
Among those to be decorated is Senior Airman Kyle Ernst, a vehicle operator who will receive the Purple Heart. He was wounded by shrapnel in his left leg and body while he was manning a .50-caliber machine gun turret in a truck convoy outside Baghdad.
"It was beyond what my Air Force specialty calls for, but I volunteered," Ernst said in a news release. "I took one for the team."
