Yvonne Sy Clark, an accomplished musician and music teacher, died Wednesday in Newfane Inter- Community Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was 78.
Born Yvonne Sy in Lockport, she was an honors graduate of Lockport High School and graduated from Fredonia State College.
She was an accomplished pianist and cellist in her earlier years, performing in the Palace Theater in Lockport with the Buffalo Philharmonic and Lockport orchestras. She also played in numerous theatrical productions and choral concerts at Newfane schools.
She taught music in the Newfane School District for 30 years.
Mrs. Clark was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and organist and choir director for 28 years. She also led the Bell Choir. She was treasurer of the church's Women's Service Society and participated in the Bible study group. She also served meals in the church's nutrition program.
Her family said she was known for her humor and all fun things.
Her husband, Carlton, died in 1984.
Survivors include five sons, Mark Mathewson of North Tonawanda, Rick Mathewson of Chili, Chris Mathewson of Burt, Jeff Garcia-Mathewson of Waterport and Kevin Mathewson of Cicero; two daughters, Lorri Mathewson of Newfane and Debbie Sprague of Lyndonville; a stepson, Gene Clark of Golden Meadow, La.; 22 grand children; and three great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Faith Lutheran Church, Transit Road. Burial will be in Corwin Cemetery.
