Graveside services for Ruth L. Thorpe, a former Hamburg resident, were held today in Gibbon, Neb.

Mrs. Thorpe died Thursday in her Gibbon home. She was 87.

Born Ruth Heineman, she graduated from Hamburg High School and received a degree in microbiology from Cornell University.

Mrs. Thorpe worked in hospitals as a laboratory technician in hematology. She and her husband had moved to Gibbon in 2000 to live with their daughter, Sandra Borden.

Mrs. Thorpe had said she "hated Nebraska weather but the people were the nicest in the world."

Her hobbies included knitting and gardening, and she was involved in the Baha'i faith, where she found strength and solitude.

Her husband of 61 years, Eugene S., died in January 2001.

Besides her daughter, survivors include three sons, W. Keith of Sacramento, Calif., David of Caracas, Venezuela, and Philip of Rochester; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
