OLAF FUB SEZ: According to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. (1841-1935), "To have doubted one's own first principles is the mark of a civilized man." . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1605, conspirators had planned to blow up the Houses of Parliament and King James I. But the 20 barrels of gunpowder they hid in the cellar under Parliament were discovered the night before, and the conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, were arrested. Fawkes and seven of his buddies were beheaded. Today is known as "Guy Fawkes Day" in England. . . .

LET'S EAT -- "All you can eat" spaghetti dinners will be served from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, 711 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst. The cost will be $6 for adults and $3 for children 7 to 10. Kids 6 and younger eat free.

Also at 5 p.m. Saturday, family-style ham dinners will be served at Protection United Methodist Church on South Protection Road, just off Route 16 about three miles south of Holland and three miles north of Chaffee. . . .

COMMUNITY PRIDE -- Joseph Dorgan, president of the Machias Volunteer Fire Company, wrote that the department will open its doors at 11:30 a.m. Saturday for a ticket auction "to benefit our building fund."

The company is building a station that would consolidate all of its equipment and resources. Members decided they would build the new hall without tax money "so as not to put a burden on the community" of 2,400 residents. The hall is about 75 percent complete, and the department is working on paying off a $175,000 mortgage.

The department moved its trucks and offices into the new hall last winter. . . .

GREMLINS GOT US -- Olaf was on vacation when a request came in to publish the birthday of Amy E. Gerbec for Oct. 28. All we can say is we are sorry. . . .

DEEP RETIREMENT -- Olaf was listening to a radio program the other day when he heard a woman who had called in identify herself as a "retired senior citizen." . . .
