Consumers may soon no longer have the option of shoping at the Dick's Sporting Goods on Union Road in Cheektowaga.
The closing would be a result of Dick's acquiring Galyan's Trading Co., which has a store in the Walden Galleria -- less than a mile from the Dick's at 3637 Union Road. Dick's changed the signs at the Galyan's store last month.
When Dick's announced the acquisition in June, the company's chairman, Ed Stack, said that some Dick's stores and some Galyan's stores would close where there is overlap. Sources in the real estate industry say that Dick's has asked Pyramid Brokerage Co. to find a tenant to sublease the 50,000-square-foot store on Union Road.
Arthur Judelsohn of Pyramid, which merged with Berlow Real Estate, said he could not comment. Dick's said that Securities and Exchange Commission rules prevented its executives from commenting on the store closing until the company's third-quarter earnings call in two weeks.
"At that point we expect to announce our plans in overlapping markets," said Jeffrey R. Hennion, senior vice president of strategic planning.
Dick's now operates 221 stores in 32 states, including five in the Buffalo area. Dick's has propelled itself from the seventh largest sporting goods retailer to the No. 3 position, behind Wal-Mart in first place and the Sports Authority, according to the National Sporting Goods Association.
