A 31-year-old Buffalo woman was found dead Tuesday night after she was brutally beaten and stabbed several times during a domestic dispute, police said.

The body of Carey Bassett was found inside her boyfriend's apartment at 299 Normal Ave., near Vermont and Rhode Island street. She was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

John J. Ryan, 45, was arrested and charged Wednesday with second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

At about 6:10 p.m., the landlord called police to report he was worried because he had not seen one of his tenants for several days.

About 10 minutes later, Central District officers arrived and found the body. Police said she was beaten with a barbell and stabbed multiple times in the abdomen with a knife.

At about 10:30 p.m., Ryan entered the Erie County Medical Center emergency room for treatment, reportedly for alcohol intoxication or drug abuse, police said.

Detective Sgt. James P. Lonergan and Detective Patrick Judge arrested Ryan at the hospital.

After arraignment Wednesday, Ryan was being held in the Erie County Holding Center; bail will be set later. He is to appear Tuesday in City Court.
