OLAF FUB SEZ: It was Spanish novelist, dramatist and poet Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) who noted: "Ill luck, you know, seldom comes alone." . . .

ON THIS DAY -- In 1718, John Montague, Fourth Earl of Sandwich, inventor of the sandwich, England's first lord of the admiralty, postmaster general and the man for whom Capt. Cook named the Sandwich Islands, was born. A gambler, legend has it that he invented the sandwich as a time-savimg snack during a 24-hour gambling session in 1762. . . . In 1793, Stephen Fuller Austin, a principal founder of Texas, for whom its capital city is named, was born in Wythe County, Va. . . . In 1794, American poet William Cullen Bryant was born in Cummington, Mass. . . .

REMINDER -- Clam chowder and chicken soup are just some of the goodies awaiting visitors to the annual bazaar at Union Road United Church of Christ, 2628 Union Road, Cheektowaga, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Ruth Glim, bazaar chairwoman, wrote that the event will also feature "a variety of homemade baked goods, plants and our famous (homemade) pies." She said the church kitchen will serve lunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. She added: "Don't miss our fabulous pies, the best in Western New York." . . .

"DE-CLUTTER" TIME -- Missy Byrne sent word that the West Seneca Woman's Club will get "tips and techniques" on how to "de-clutter your home and your life" from Fran Carr at a meeting of the club at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Ebenezer Church of Christ, 610 Main St., West Seneca.

Byrne wrote that women 18 and older "are welcome to attend." For information, call 674-5044 or 825-1168. . . .

VOLUNTEER GROUPS are invited to Christmas carol for the residents of the Erie County Home, 11580 Walden Ave., Alden, from 1 to 2 p.m. Dec. 6, according to Peg Hegierski, director of activities.

She said Scout troops, youth groups, church choirs and informal groups will be welcome. She said the groups will be sent to different areas of the building to do their caroling. Punch and cookies will be served. For information, call 937-5793.

Meanwhile, as the holidays approach, "The home is asking for help to assure that all our 600 residents are remembered with a gift of Christmas Day," Hegierski wrote. "Many residents have no family, and the only gift they may receive will be from a generous donor. Items both big and small are appreciated."

She suggested unwrapped gifts be dropped off at the main entrance by Dec. 3. To obtain a copy of gift suggestions, call 937-5671. . .
