An article in The Buffalo News Viewpoints section that evaluated airport security a few months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks won a gold award in the 19th annual Lowell Thomas Travel Journalism Competition, sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation.
The article by freelance writer Deborah Williams won first place in the travel news/investigative reporting category. It was published in The News on May 26, 2002.
The Lowell Thomas contest, considered the most prestigious in travel journalism, drew 1,121 entries in 23 categories. It was judged by faculty at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, and winners were announced last weekend at the travel writers convention in Orlando, Fla.
