Services for Thad Johnson, 87, a retired district supervisor for the Erie County Department of Social Services, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in Thomas T. Edwards Funeral Home, 995 Genesee St. Burial will be scheduled.
Johnson, a native of Dillon, N.C., died Saturday (Feb. 24, 2001) in Sheehan Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He came to Buffalo with his family when he was 12 years old. He lettered in track, cross country and basketball at Hutchinson-Central High School. He served four years in the Army Air Forces during World War II.
Johnson received a bachelor's degree in social work and later a master's degree from the University of Buffalo.
He worked for the Department of Social Services for 19 years and was a district supervisor when he retired in 1975.
He enjoyed bowling and participated in many tournaments.
Survivors include his wife, the former Sarah H. Vernon; two daughters, Berea Wingard of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Carolyn Platt of Buffalo; two sons, Joel of California and Michael of New York City; a sister, Elizabeth of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
