The Cattaraugus County Legislature will name a committee to look at alternate forms of county government.
Majority Leader Mark S. Williams, R-Hinsdale, sponsored the resolution to create the panel. It will be appointed by Legislature Chairman Gerard Fitzpatrick, R-Ellicottville. The committee is to report by Dec. 31.
Options include a charter form of government with a legislature and county manager. Currently, the county has an administrator who reports to the part-time lawmakers.
Williams said there hasn't been a study on the issue in more than 20 years.
"The people are saying let's take a look and see what we come up with," Williams said.
The New Millennium Government Committee will be composed of six legislators, including the chairman, vice chairman, majority and minority leaders, and six members of the public.
In other business, a resolution was approved for an application to the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for funding to develop 500 acres in the Town of Napoli as a nature sanctuary and research center.
Legislators adjourned in memory of Legislator Benjamin J. Calabro, D-Salamanca, who died Feb. 21 after attending legislative meetings in the County Center.
A flower placed on Calabro's vacant desk was accompanied by a note: "We miss you Benny."
Democrats in District 9 will meet tonight to interview candidates to replace Calabro. Legislators are expected to appoint a replacement at their next meeting, March 14.
