Michael P. Alianello Jr. wants to be the first member of his immediate family to set foot on the European continent.

The 12-year-old is also interested in meeting people from different cultures.

Michael will have the opportunity to do both in July when he travels with the People to People Student Ambassador Program, an overseas educational program for students in sixth through 12th grades.

Michael, a seventh-grader at Tonawanda Junior High School, is one of 40 local middle school students who were selected to participate in the 21-day Cultures of Europe program, which involves stops in France, Germany, Spain and Switzerland.

The selection process for the student ambassadors consists of recommendations from teachers and interviews.

The tuition for the program is $4,390, which includes meals, transportation, accommodations and educational activities.

Michael's family plans to hold fund-raisers to pay for his trip. They've set up a special account at Charter One Bank, 20 Main St., Tonawanda, for area organizations and businesses to donate to the fund.
