A man who once claimed he was on a mission from God to kill abortion doctors has escaped from jail.
Clayton Lee Waagner, 44, was being held at DeWitt County Jail while he awaited sentencing for weapons possession.
Sheriff Roger Massey said Waagner was able to break out Thursday because of what he described only as a "design deficiency" in the 5-year-old jail.
Police used a helicopter, roadblocks and search dogs to try to find him.
The Kennerdell, Pa., man was arrested in 1999 after crossing into Illinois with his wife and eight children in a stolen Winnebago with four stolen handguns under the driver's seat. He was convicted in December.
During his trial, he testified that he had carried out surveillance on abortion clinics and doctors for months and stocked up on weapons after God asked him to "be my warrior" and kill doctors who perform abortions.
