Matthew Sweet spent most of the '90s hoping for a follow-up hit to his majestic 1991 album, "Girlfriend." With his appealing blend of pop and rock that still sounds like the Beach Boys meet R.E.M., it's still the album he's best known for. That record featured the picture of a youthful Tuesday Weld on the cover and the music captured her aura of youth, beauty and romance. The album went gold and became an alternative hit. Somehow, though, Sweet never really followed up with an equal work, although his 1995 "100 Percent Fun" earned critical acclaim.

Sweet remains a thoughtful pop poet, but seems destined to be more a cult figure than a mainstream attraction. Fans can check out Sweet's work on last year's "Time Capsule," a greatest hits collection, or see him Wednesday in the Tralf.
