Developers for Home Depot have been given site plan approval for a new, 114,000-square-foot store in the Wegmans-Kmart Plaza in West Ellicott.

The Ellicott Town Planning Board approved the project Wednesday, allowing the home improvement chain to obtain a building permit once several conditions have been met.

Planning Board Chairman Daniel Evans Thursday said those include obtaining standard easements between Wegmans and the building site to the east of the supermarket; creating a parking area on the northeast corner of the site with a pedestrian crosswalk over a truck delivery access road, more buffers on the eastern side of the locations near some homes, and a retaining wall and fence between the store and Southwestern Central School to the south.

Home Depot officially announced its plans for the site at Route 394 and Southwestern Drive. Spokesman John Simley noted the facility would include a 19,000-square-foot outdoor garden center.

He said the West Ellicott Home Depot store would employ about 150 with about 80 percent being full time.

Evans said officials expect construction to begin this June with an opening in December.
