ARCADE -- A Delevan man was arrested Monday on charges of violating probation and marijuana possession.
Robert J. Deputla Jr., 18, of South Main Street, was arrested at Prestolite by Cattaraugus County sheriff's deputies, state police and Village of Arcade police.
He faces a Cattaraugus County warrant for violating probation on a 1999 grand larceny case and was additionally charged with having marijuana that police said they found in his pockets.
Deputla pleaded innocent at his arraignment in Cattaraugus County Court. His case was adjourned until Monday.
Tractor-trailer driver killed
as rig goes off road in Byron
BYRON -- A tractor-trailer accident killed a Brampton, Ont., man early Tuesday, Genesee County sheriff's deputies said.
Gordon W. Varcoe, 26, was eastbound on Route 262, near Transit, about 5:35 a.m. when the tractor-trailer went off the road's south shoulder into a ditch, sheriff's officials said.
The rig then came back onto the road, went off the north shoulder, struck a culvert and rolled over onto its passenger side, sheriff's deputies said. Varcoe was pronounced dead at the scene.
2 Woodlawn men charged
in arson on Lake Shore Road
Town of Hamburg police arrested two Woodlawn men on arson charges early Tuesday after a fire that started in a storage shed behind the former Dickie's Donuts shop at 3333 Lake Shore Road.
Flames spread to a car dealer's lot, where two vehicles were destroyed, but the Woodlawn Volunteer Fire Company kept the fire from the former doughnut shop.
Detective Glenn Zawierucha and Officer Pete Dienes charged Michael Bannister, 21, and Nicholas Breidenstein, 20, with arson, according to Lt. Steve Mikac, who said the fire was reported at 5:43 a.m. Police had to close some lanes on Lake Shore Road, but they were reopened in time for the bulk of the morning rush hour.
