Ruth J. French, a retired teacher, died Thursday (Feb. 15, 2001) in her residence at St. Columban's on the Lake Retirement Home. She was 93.
Born Ruth Jones in French Creek, she was a graduate of Fredonia Normal School. She earned a bachelor's degree from Albany State College and a master's degree in education from Fredonia State College.
She also earned certification to teach the visually impaired from Syracuse University and certification in reading from Temple University.
Mrs. French, who had lived in Dunkirk, taught for many years in the Dunkirk public schools and had tutored many students privately.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Dunkirk, the New York State Retired Teachers Association, the American Association of University Women, Delta Kappa Gamma sorority and the Dunkirk Garden Club.
Her husband of 52 years, Philo L., died in 1990. Her two sons, Livingston and Malcolm, died Jan. 16, 1990, in an airplane accident.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of St. Columban's on the Lake Retirement Home, 2546 East Lake Road. Burial in Willowbrook Park Cemetery, Dunkirk, will be private.
