WINTER'S ABOUT-FACE PUT JANUARY ABOVE AVERAGE

After the rugged winter conditions of November and December, the weather proved unusually tranquil in January, normally a month known for weather extremes.

The average temperature of 27 degrees was 3.4 degrees above normal.

Precipitation was more than a half-inch below the average of 2.7 inches.

Almost half of the month's total fell as rain on the month's last two days.

Snowfall was frequent but light, with a monthly total of 19.6 inches, 6 inches below average. The winter total through Jan. 31, 115.5 inches, is still almost double the usual amount for the period and the third highest on record for that point in the season.

The month was more cloudy than normal, with only 20 percent of the possible sunshine, compared with a January average of 31 percent. Thirteen days had no sun at all.
