City schools lag behind suburban schools in funding and facilities for sports. What an amazing revelation! Here's another blast -- our city schools also lag behind in funding for art and music programs, library books, classroom supplies and teachers' aides. How about a community forum to address these issues?
Advocates for school sports often stress the need for physical education, and Mayor Anthony M. Masiello says we have to invest in the physical well-being of our students. The advocates are right. However, sports programs teach a select group of students how to play a specific sport, and many of these students will not continue these activities after graduation. Let's use our limited funds to teach all students how to stay physically fit now and for the rest of their lives.
