Joseph F. Moran, 68, a former Niagara County sheriff's deputy, died Friday (Feb. 16, 2001) in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Moran was born in Oswego and grew up in Niagara Falls. He was in the first graduating class of the former Bishop Duffy High School in 1950 and later attended Niagara University.
Moran saw action in the Korean War with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He was a member of John J. Welch Post 381, American Legion.
He joined the Sheriff's Department in January 1958 as a deputy. He was later promoted to detective sergeant. He retired in 1978.
Moran later worked as a clerk in the mail room of the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Buffalo until 1993.
Survivors include his wife, the former Sheila I. Richardson; two sons, Daniel J. and Paul J., both of Niagara Falls; his brother, John E. of Clarence; his sister, Nancy Nichols of Niagara Falls; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon Monday in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 11th Street and South Avenue, preceded by prayers at 11:30 a.m. in Rhoney Funeral Home, 1124 Ontario Ave. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
