Janet W. Hessney, 75, a retired teacher, died Thursday (Feb. 15, 2001) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born Janet Wickham in Flint, Mich., she moved to Lewiston in 1957. She was a 1946 graduate of Brockport Teachers College and later attended Niagara University and Columbia University.
Mrs. Hessney was a substitute teacher at Lewiston Red Brick School and in the Lewiston-Porter Central School District for 15 years. She then taught adult education in Niagara Falls for 10 years before retiring in 1977.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, Niagara Frontier Country Club in Youngstown and the Lewiston Service Guild, of which she was a past president.
She also was a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association and a former member of the Lewiston Public Library Board and the Mothers Club.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, John C.; two sons, J. Steven of Pittsford and Jeffrey C. of Youngstown; two daughters, Dr. Joanne Irwin Hessney of Rochester and J. Susan of White Plains; a brother, Donald Wickham of Victor; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston, 505 Cayuga St. Burial will be in Oakland Rural Cemetery.
