A memorial service for Walter A. Machmer, 94, a retired accountant and treasurer for Meals on Wheels for many years, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. James United Church of Christ, 76 Main St., Hamburg.
Machmer, a lifelong resident of Hamburg, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 2001) in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.
He was educated in Hamburg schools and was a graduate of Bryant & Stratton Business Institute. He started his business career in 1926 as a stockbroker's accountant for Schoellkopf, Hutton and Pomeroy. He later worked for Dominick and Dominick until his retirement in 1971.
From 1942 to 1945, during World War II, Machmer was a technical sergeant with the 78th Army Air Force and served for more than two years in the China-Burma-India Campaign.
He married Marjorie Herschel in October 1946. She died in 1962.
A resident of Rosewood Village, he was active until recently in several civic, church and fraternal organizations, including the Independent Order of Odd Fellows of Hamburg-Orchard Park and the Hamburg Grange, which presented him a Citizen of the Year award.
Machmer, who enjoyed walking, bowling and his weekly luncheons with the Sunshine Club, had been superintendent and treasurer of St. James United Church of Christ School. He also maintained an interest and membership in the Town of Hamburg Band.
