Mary M. Varela, 95, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 2001) in Seneca Manor Nursing Home, West Seneca. The Buffalo resident was 95.
Born Mary Mahiques in Denia, Spain, she came to Buffalo when she was 12, not speaking English. But within two years, she had progressed to the point where she obtained the second-highest average in both seventh and eighth grades.
She was a 1926 graduate of Hutchinson-Central High School. She worked as a Spanish translator, usually involving letters, for Buffalo Forge Co., which did business in South America, and the Mexican consul in Buffalo.
She was known as an excellent cook and enjoyed making both Spanish and American dishes.
Over the years, she was a member of North Delaware, Richmond and Orchard Park United Methodist churches.
Her husband of 53 years, Joseph, died in 1987. She is survived by a son, Noel of Orchard Park; a daughter, Rose Marie Budnick of West Seneca; a sister, Laura Torrico of Buffalo; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held todayWednesday in Kenmore United Methodist Church. Burial was in Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
