Jerome T. Metz, a longtime Strykersville businessman and community leader, died Monday (Feb. 12, 2001) in his home after a long illness. He was 91.
The Java Center native owned Metz Gas Service for more than 35 years. He helped found the Strykersville Emergency Squad and was long active in public education as a trustee of Sheldon School District 10 and Holland Central School District.
Metz was a charter member of the Java-Strykersville Kiwanis Club and a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church in Strykersville, where he helped lead a fund drive to replace the organ.
Surviving are his wife, the former Coletta F. George; three sons, Gary J. of Brockport, Robert J. of Orchard Park and Kevin J. of Atlanta; a daughter, Ann Marie Kerr of the Town of Tonawanda; two brothers, Adrian and Norbert, both of Florida; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Mary Queen of the Rosary Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.
