TWO MEN ARRESTED, ACCUSED OF DRAG RACING

LEWISTON -- Two men were arrested after police said they were spotted drag racing on Ridge Road shortly before 4 a.m. Sunday.

Niagara County sheriff's deputies charged Gregory M. Berner, 22, of Lyndonville and Eric P. Van-
Wagoner, 22, of Appleton with having an unauthorized speed contest. VanWagoner also was charged with unsafe passing.

Deputy M.J. Cipollitti said the two were spotted driving side-by-side at a high rate of speed, VanWagoner on the wrong side of a yellow line dividing the highway. Both face Lewiston Town Court appearances.

Two women arrested
on felony drug charges

NIAGARA FALLS -- Felony drug charges were lodged against two women arrested at a 61st Street address Sunday.

Police said Sonya A. Hunt, 26, of Buffalo and Arica T. Thomas, 23, of the 61st Street address were charged with first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of drug paraphernalia.

Further details were not provided. Both women face arraignment in City Court.

Traffic stop in Falls leads
to incident with passenger

NIAGARA FALLS -- A routine traffic stop led to the arrest of a Jordan Gardens man late Saturday, police said.

Officer Jay Fisher Jr. said he pulled a car over shortly after 11 p.m. because the driver failed to signal for a turn and was violating city noise ordinances with a loud stereo.

Fisher said a passenger in the car gave police a false name and, upon learning there was an outstanding warrant for his arrest, punched Officer Frank Yamonaco in the face and attempted to flee.

Ronnie L. Siner, 22, was subsequently charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest, false personation and fourth-degree criminal mischief. Siner had been wanted on a warrant for failure to appear, police said.

Falls taxi driver robbed
of $120 by man with gun

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police are seeking a man in connection with the armed robbery Sunday morning of a driver for Blue Taxi Co.

The driver told police he had dropped off a fare at about 2 a.m. when another person flagged him down from an alley off Falls Street. The man got into the cab and jabbed what appeared to be a gun into the back of the driver's head and demanded money, police said.

The robber fled on foot after taking $120.

Asleep at wheel, driver, 18,
faces DWI and other charges

NIAGARA FALLS -- An 71st Street man was charged with driving while intoxicated Sunday after police said they found him asleep behind the wheel of an idling car at 70th Street and Buffalo Avenue.

Officers said they initially could not awaken Harley D. Glenn, 18, who failed field sobriety tests. Glenn, who also was charged with restricted operations violation, faces a City Court appearance.

Two stolen vehicles
recovered by Falls police

NIAGARA FALLS -- Police recovered two vehicles reported stolen by city residents Sunday and said a third vehicle theft was unsuccessful.

A car stolen Sunday from a Cayuga Village resident was recovered after being involved in a crash and the driver fled, police said. The car -- unlocked and with the keys in the ignition -- was taken from the 1600 block of Niagara Avenue, police said.

An Elmwood Avenue resident's 1989 sport utility vehicle was recovered on 10th Street, where it had been abandoned after being stolen during the early afternoon, police said.

Meanwhile, the steering column of car owned by a Lockport Street man was broken in an unsuccessful theft attempt, police said.

Items stolen from house
recovered; three arrested

NIAGARA FALLS -- More than $2,200 worth of items stolen from a 15th Street home were returned to the owner Saturday after police said they tracked down three juveniles who committed the burglary.

Police said the three broke a vent in a basement window and entered the home while the occupants were out Saturday afternoon. They took video game equipment as well as $100 in rolled quarters, jewelry and a pellet handgun, police added.

The police Juvenile Division is investigating.
