SALAMANCA -- The Salamanca Board of Education will meet Tuesday and make plans for the annual election May 15 to fill one position.

The term of board President Anne M. O'Brien expires June 30.

Nominating petitions are now available for anyone interested in being a candidate for the unsalaried position.

People who want to register to vote in the election can do so from noon to 4 p.m. at the school district campus and from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Seneca Nation of Indians' Haley Building in Jimersontown, both on April 23.

The board meeting at 7:30 p.m. will consider removing several properties from the property tax rolls due to Native American immunity and canceling taxes totaling $2,511.

Student art will be displayed

PERRY -- The 15th annual Wyoming County Elementary Student Art Exhibit will run from March 2 to 30.

The event will be in Arts Council for Wyoming County Gallery, 31 S. Main St. It will feature the work of students from Wyoming County's six school districts.

Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays or by appointment. Residents can call 237-3517 for more information.

Kindergarten registration scheduled

YORKSHIRE -- Kindergarten registration for the Pioneer School District in September 2001 will be held in the Arcade and Delevan elementary schools from March 19 to 23 and from March 26 to 30.

A child planning to attend kindergarten this fall must have a fifth birthday on or before Dec. 1, 2001, to be eligible. Registration forms are available in either elementary school office.

Parents do not need to bring their child to the school for the registration, but parents do need a completed registration form, along with the child's birth certificate, immunization record and custody papers if necessary.

Vocal ensemble seeking altos, basses

WARSAW -- A Wyoming County cappella vocal ensemble is seeking altos and basses.

The group, named Collage, performs at a variety of locations, including HSBC Arena and Chautauqua Institution.

Olean School Board sets work session

OLEAN -- Swimming pool operation and an enrichment program will be two of the topics discussed Wednesday night in a work session of the Olean School Board.

The work session begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Olean High School board room. The board will hold a formal meeting Feb. 20 at the same time and location.

Olean Council to vote on deal renewal

OLEAN -- The Olean Common Council will vote Tuesday night on the renewal of an agreement allowing Olean to dispose its sludge at the Allegany County Landfill in exchange for Allegany County's landfill leachate being treated at the city's wastewater facility.

This is the continuation of an arrangement of several years. If the measure is approved, the city will pay $25 per ton, and Allegany County will pay $.027 per gallon.

The Council also is scheduled to discuss the request of Robert A. Benjamin, a South Street Frito-Lay distributor, to lease an access road to his property near the sewage treatment plant on South 20th Street, at an annual cost of $750.
