LET'S TRY TO FOCUS ON COMMON BELIEFS

Recently there was an ad in The News from the Seventh Day Adventists. I found it particularly hurtful because I am a Catholic. During the history of the Catholic Church, we have made mistakes. We have had bad popes and priests, but the same can be said of other faiths.

When we learn from our mistakes and react with love to our fellow human beings, we make a real effort to make the world a better place. When we act out of arrogance and hate, we become destroyers. When we impose our beliefs on others, we cause a type of spiritual slavery. It is good to share one's beliefs, but not to force-feed anyone.

I did not like what the Seventh Day Adventists had to say, but I love them as fellow human beings and I respect their right to worship as they wish, even if I do not agree with them. In the name of ecumenism, I embrace all people with love, and focus on what we have in common, rather than on what sets us apart.
