Could it be that the stars and planets are finally coming into alignment for a real economic renaissance for Buffalo and Erie County?
Gov. George Pataki seems to finally realize that "upstate" needs help, reversing his statements to the contrary during the U.S. Senate campaign. Through his State of the State and budget messages, he has offered some optimistic programs for our region. He may realize that he must do whatever he can to overcome his previous negatives as he looks at a rough re-election campaign.
Sen. Hillary Clinton has promised us relief and help from day one of her successful campaign, and now is in a position to deliver whatever can be gleaned from Washington. Together with Sen. Charles Schumer, she will be an ardent promoter of the solutions to our problems.
Paul Tokasz, in his new role as Assembly majority leader, is positioned to bring much-needed Albany assistance to his native area.
HSBC and the ubiquitous Adelphia projects are more encouraging positive factors in our potential turnaround. Mayor Anthony Masiello and County Executive Joel Giambra must seize the moment to facilitate these fortuitous conjunctions.
This is undoubtably a rare and unique opportunity, and every aspect must be exploited to the best economic advantage for our struggling area.
