As motorists enter Cattaraugus County, a sign states, "Naturally yours to enjoy." The Route 219 proposal would defeat the essence of this greeting. In a time when we are trying to control urban sprawl because of its economic inefficiency, we should not waste public money to further it.
If we weigh the pros and cons, there's no contest. This project would destroy thousands of acres of wildlife habitat, accelerate the exodus from Buffalo and squander tax dollars that should be spent to maintain the roads in existence. There already is a north-south route, Interstate 79. Is this project worth the temporary jobs for the construction workers, not to mention the new sign -- "artificially yours"? Let's not destroy our assets.
