Twice during the school year, the Cheektowaga Police Department rewards selected town students for making the right decision in an important situation.

Lynsey Cycon, 12, was one of the 17 students who recently received the department's Do the Right Thing Award, along with certificates and prizes.

The 12-year-old was recognized for her deed that possibly saved a woman's life.

Lynsey, who became a Buffalo News carrier in June, noticed one day in August that one of her customers, a friendly elderly woman who always met her at the front door when Lynsey delivered her newspaper, was not at home when Lynsey dropped off her paper.

Lynsey became concerned. She told her aunt that it was out of character for the woman to not meet her at her front door. Her aunt then contacted authorities, who found that the woman had fallen in her bathroom. The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Lynsey also received a Buffalo News Community Service Award for her act.
