I grieve for the two teenagers who were killed and the two who were seriously injured when they were struck by a car on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst. I agonize with those of us who for so long have seen this tragedy coming. We warned, appealed to and tried to prod our elected officials to deal with the problem of blocked sidewalks. This tragedy was totally preventable. If only our elected officials had had the guts, foresight and wisdom to do their duty and enforce the law. There is no excuse to hide behind - the law is clear.
As much as I hate to suggest this, I urge the families who are suffering this senseless loss to hold the driver, the property owners and public officials liable for their negligence. If not criminal charges, then civil charges should be filed.
Perhaps it's time for a class-action lawsuit by all endangered pedestrians who are put at risk all winter long because property owners and elected officials throughout Western New York will not do their jobs. If such lawsuits are what it will take to motivate them to action, then so be it.
