Delta Air Lines offered its pilots raises ranging from 7 percent to 17.5 percent in a contract proposal made Thursday that would limit the amount of flying regional carriers would be allowed to perform. The Air Line Pilots Association called the proposal "a step in the right direction" but said parts of the proposal remain unacceptable.

The Bank of England, hoping to ward off a U.S.-style economic slowdown, trimmed a key interest rate Thursday by a quarter of a percentage point to 5.75 percent -- its first decrease since mid-1999.

The Motley Fool, which provides investment and personal finance advice, has laid off 115 workers, or roughly one-third of its work force, as part of a corporate restructuring. The Alexandria-based firm prides itself on offering straightforward investment advice in an entertaining fashion.
