I am writing in response to the letter, "Give us back our sidewalk on Hertel." Kostas Restaurant, a mainstay on Hertel Avenue, has done something most other businesses are envious of. A few shops may complain about their visibility because of the expansion, but most wish they had done it first.
Our family moved to North Buffalo about six years ago. We "discovered" this area because we visited Kostas. It was word-of-mouth that led us there. The only aesthetic renaissance of the Hertel businesses are the merchants themselves.
I have visited similar areas in Toronto, where thousands of people crowd sidewalks narrower than what Kostas has left us. The people have no problem negotiating the small sidewalk and, of course, spending their money.
