FUNDING FAITH GROUPS IS A TERRIBLE IDEA

President Bush has opened an office to facilitate federal funding for "faith-based" groups. Since the federal government cannot give money to organizations that discriminate in hiring, it must be safe to assume that prospective employees will not be rejected on the basis of religion or sexual orientation.

It is comforting to know that the monitoring and enforcement of these nondiscrimination statutes will be under the careful scrutiny of John Ashcroft's Justice Department. If anyone believes that these "faith-based" programs will not use tax dollars to promulgate some form of religion, which would you like to buy, a signature span or a twin span?
