FITCHLEE REMAINS RED HOT

Robb Fitchlee, co-player of the week last week in the State University Athletic Conference, continued his strong play for Fredonia Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-7 former Kenmore West star scored 23 points and led the Blue Devils over Buffalo State, 64-49, in men's basketball at Steele Hall in Fredonia.

Nate Duvert had 20 points and Matt Moore 10 for Fredonia (12-7, 9-6), which snapped Buffalo State's three-game winning streak. Shawn Haseley (Grand Island) led the Bengals (11-9, 7-9) with 15 points.

Jason Hargrove (Park) scored 27 points, Lawrence Maroney and Chris Spencer had 14 each and Joe Chirico added 13 in Erie Community College's 96-80 triumph over visiting Monroe CC. The Kats improved to 18-7 and face Genesee CC in a Penn-York Conference game at the Flickinger Center Thursday night at 8.

Jameel Koonce scored 24 points and Steve Chandler and Will Winegarner had 19 each to lead Niagara County CC (9-13) over Jamestown-Olean CC, 77-69. Jamar Morris had 22 for JOCC.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Kim Guenther (Lancaster) had 15 points and Renee Harpster (Holy Angels) 13 as Fredonia tripped Buffalo State, 63-57, in Fredonia.

The Blue Devils improved to 11-8 overall, 8-7 in SUNYAC. Buffalo State is 13-7, 9-7 in SUNYAC.

Monica Polka (Lewiston-Porter) led the Lady Bengals with 20.

Jamestown-Olean CC downed Niagara County CC, 51-34, as Angelica Granger scored 21 points and Helen King (Medina) added 13. Becky Jordan had 11 points and 11 rebounds and Krysta Tracy (Lew-Port) had 13 rebounds and four blocks for the Trail Blazers.

FOOTBALL: A former NFL linebacker and a strength and conditioning coach with 16 seasons of experience on the collegiate level complete the coaching staff of University at Buffalo football coach Jim Hofher.

Antonio Goss, an eight-year veteran who was part of two San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl teams, will coach the linebackers. He served as captain of the Niners' special teams. Goss played one season with the St. Louis Rams as well. He comes to UB from North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., where he coached linebackers and special teams. Goss's first coaching positions were at East Chapel Hill, N.C., High for two years.

Also joining Hofher's staff is Jim Peal, who was the head strength coach at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C., for 12 years. Prior to that he worked at Evansville, Tennessee and Kansas State as a graduate assistant or assistant strength coach. Peal, a native of Shadyside, Ohio, is a graduate of Miami University and earned a masters degree at Tennessee.

WRESTLING: UB improved its dual meet record to 10-4 with a 43-3 triumph over Slippery Rock (Pa.) University. Josh States (Lockport) scored a pin at 2:23 of his 184-pound match. Sean Kegel (133 pounds) piled up a 16-1 lead in scoring a technical fall. Taylor Lehmann (197) defeated Matt Hildreth for his first win of the season. Ben Cooper (174) won a major decision over Adam Shawver, 11-3, and Labe Black (157) also had a major win over Anthony Errera.

Saturday the Bulls face an important meet at Central Michigan. Both teams are unbeaten in the Mid-American Conference.
