New York State grades our Ellicottville School District for student performance. Let's take a look at the accomplishments of the past several years under the leadership of Superintendent Michael LaFever. Morale is at an all-time low. Teachers are working without a contract. The budget was voted down for the first time in more than 20 years. A capital project was voted down. And teaching positions are not being filled.
The Board of Education is now attempting to establish a tuition policy that would increase fees for nonresident students. However, this action is based on a survey to which only 10 percent of the community responded. The most recent budget and capital project were voted down as a result of many community issues. Yet, as with this invalid survey process, LaFever blames this lack of community support on the tuition issue.
