Mary Ellen Utz, 72, a retired nurse, died Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) in her Cheektowaga home after a brief illness.
Born Mary Ellen Donovan in Buffalo, she graduated from Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing and served as a registered nurse in intensive care, coronary care and the emergency and operating rooms from 1953 to 1973. From 1973 to 1979 she was head nurse at Manhattan Manor Nursing Home in Buffalo, retiring as director of nursing in 1980.
She was a charter member of the Auxiliary of Francis J. Donovan Post, American Legion, in Cheektowaga and had served as president.
Survivors include her husband, Clayton O.; a son, Geoffrey of Havelock, N.C.; two daughters, Laura of Bologna, Italy, and Judith Kollias of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Gerald Donovan of Poca, W.Va.; two sisters, Dorothy D. Downey of Naples, Fla., and Jeanne D'Addario of Eggertsville; and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered today in St. Aloysius Gonzaga Catholic Church, Cheektowaga. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
