My husband and I were privileged to attend the public memorial service on Jan. 24 for Jake, the K-9 dog who served for 10 years in the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Department with loyalty, devotion and enthusiasm. Jake's work and record with his handler, Jim Carlson, was very impressive. Jake rightfully deserved the respect and honor of all who were present at the service in Celeron.
The Rev. Dennis Johnson pointed out that Jake worked every day, including holidays, and never asked for a raise or filed a grievance. Dogs serve in so many capacities that benefit humans -- K-9, guiding eyes for the blind, hearing ears, locating earthquake and bombing victims, etc. Therefore, we were disappointed to find Jake's story on the last page of section B in The News.
