CUBA -- Plans for the annual convention will be discussed Feb. 11 when the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen holds its quarterly meeting at the Cuba Fire Department.

Robert J. Coudrey of Gowanda, publicity chairman, said it is important for all committee chairmen and members to attend.

Topics up for discussion include the budget, program book and convention, to be held Aug. 1 to 4 in Westfield.

The session at 2 p.m. will include refreshments. Meetings are open to all volunteer firefighters who are interested in joining the association, which comprises members in Allegany, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Erie counties.

Fishing essay contest topic chosen

MAYVILLE -- "Why I Would Like to Fish in Chautauqua County" is the theme of this year's spring fishing essay contest sponsored by the Chautauqua County Sports Fishery Advisory Board.

The contest began Thursday and will continue through March 15. Students in third through sixth grades are eligible to enter with essays of 250 words or less.

Entries will be judged by grade level, and each grade level is expected to have four winners. Additional prizes may be awarded for uniqueness regardless of grade. Each teacher will be recognized for supporting the project.

The entries are to be sent to the board, care of the Office of the County Executive.

Tourism promotion secretary named

Cyd L. Bennett, deputy commissioner of tourism for Niagara County, has been selected to serve as secretary of the New York State Tourism Promotion Agencies Council.

The council is made up of official tourism promotion agencies in New York State. Each county has one official designated agency to serve as its representative in this council.

In Niagara County, the Niagara County Department of Planning, Development and Tourism is the state representative for the council, which is headquartered in Albany.
