A playground will be built by 125 volunteers this weekend at Charlotte Avenue Elementary School.
Volunteers will work from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the school at 301 Charlotte Ave., Hamburg.
A handicapped-accessible, coated steel play piece purchased from Miracle Recreation will be erected. This project, costing approximately $47,000, was made possible largely through fund-raising started last fall by the Charlotte Avenue Playground Project Committee. The committee raised more than $30,000 through the sale of sponsorship plaques, a dessert dance/silent auction and raffle of theme baskets.
The Village of Hamburg Department of Public Works has pitched in to excavate and prepare the site. The new structure will replace age-worn playground equipment heavily used by the neighborhood.
