DISMISSAL SOUGHT FOR TWO GUARDS IN ASSAULT ON INMATE

The state is seeking the dismissal of two correction officers charged with an assault at the women's prison here that reportedly left an inmate black-and-blue.

Michael George, 37, of Sanborn, and Robert Michienzi, 39, of West Seneca, were charged this week by state police with misdemeanor counts of assault and official misconduct. The assault allegedly occurred in a recreation yard at the Albion Correctional Facility on the night of Sept. 18.

"It's my understanding that she did sustain bruises," Orleans County District Attorney Joseph Cardone said Wednesday. "I, frankly, have not met with the state police to get their final report on this."

Both officers were suspended Tuesday without pay, and the state Department of Correctional Services is seeking their dismissal from state employment.

"I will not tolerate any assault on staff or inmates by anyone," Commissioner Glenn S. Goord said. "Those individuals who chose to assault staff or inmates can be assured that they will face swift and severe disciplinary sanctions and, where applicable, criminal charges at well."

Last week, a jury convicted guard Michael Ramsey, 35, of sexually abusing an 18-year-old inmate. He get up to a year in jail for second-degree sexual abuse.
