Sidewalks at the northwest corner of Union and State streets were barricaded Tuesday after chunks of masonry fell to the sidewalk from the facade of the vacant seven-story building that once housed the Manufacturers & Hanover Bank.

Fire Chief John W. Gibbons said Louis Magnano, one of the owners of the building, now known as Park Center Towers, has assured him workers will be on the scene today to investigate the problem. Buffalo developer Carl Paladino also is part owner of the building, which has been unoccupied for more than five years.

Code enforcement officer Christopher Young said the debris was found on sidewalks around the building on Sunday and the largest chunks were about the size of a softball.
