HAMBURG BACKS PURCHASE OF HAMPTON WOODS LAND

The remaining 61 acres of Hampton Brooks Woods area in the Town of Hamburg ultimately may be transformed into public land for hiking trails, woodlands and a wildlife habitat.

The Town Board has thrown its support behind the state's efforts to buy the land from its local owners. The land includes the area near Hampton Brook Drive and along the Eighteen-Mile Creek, just a half-mile outside the village limits.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is reappraising the land and negotiating with property owners of the site. The state had previously been interested in the area a year ago.

In 1994, the town acquired a 20-acre portion of the site to prevent development and set it aside for green space and a recreation plan. The remaining portion is highly vulnerable to development pressure, and the town is interested in keeping it set aside for recreation, a town resolution stated.
