Daemen College posted one of the biggest victories in the three-year history of its women's volleyball program Tuesday night by posting its first win over NAIA power Houghton.
Daemen (12-6) swept the match, 15-8, 15-7, 15-9, as sophomore setter Erin Holahan (Roy-Hart) led the way with 27 assists and eight kills. Katie Schrantz (Lancaster) had 12 kills and Erin Rizun (Sweet Home) chipped in 17 digs. Houghton (10-4) had already beaten Daemen twice this season.
Elsewhere, D'Youville (8-7) beat Buffalo State in four games after dropping the opener. Katie Trieschl led the winners with 22 kills and 20 digs.
MEN'S TENNIS: Niagara (5-2, 3-1) posted a 7-0 MAAC blanking of Canisius as Mike Kelly Jr., Tom Rees, Jason Pope and Joe Hockreiter all won at singles and doubles. Kelly rallied for a four-set win in singles over Canisius' Vlad Lukic, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6, 7-5.
MEN'S SOCCER: Canisius (3-6) snapped a three-game losing streak by blanking Colgate, 3-0, as Antonio Gallo collected a goal and an assist and goalkeeper Dave Borchard earned the shutout. Ryan Puntiri and Eric Marsh also scored for the Griffs. . . . John Long (Tonawanda) scored in overtime to give NCCC (4-5-1) a 2-1 win over the Fredonia State JV. Charlie Woods (Starpoint) had a goal and an assist for NCCC.
WOMEN'S SOCCER: Buffalo State (3-5-1) got goals from Marissa Wexler and freshman Karen Voght (Kenmore East) in a 2-1 win over St. John Fisher.
BASEBALL: Erie Community College (13-3) advanced to the semifinals of the Western New York Conference tournament with a 13-3 victory over visiting Niagara County CC. Jeff Sargent (Grand Island) had two of the Kats' six home runs and drove in five runs. ECC scored seven in the sixth to end the game by mercy rule.
