Former President George Bush rejects an author's claim that the Bushes were unwelcome "upstairs" in the Reagan White House.
"That's ridiculous. Upstairs? I mean, that's a kind of English, upstairs-and-downstairs approach to life," Bush said in an interview broadcast Tuesday.
In "Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan," Edmund Morris writes of a Christmas Eve 1988 conversation he said he had with Bush and Bush's wife, Barbara, while Bush was vice president.
Morris quotes Bush as commenting about Reagan and his wife, Nancy: "I kinda wished they'd shown -- y'know, a little appreciation. Didn't seem to want us upstairs in the White House."
