I just got back from teaching near Vancouver, where I stayed with a couple who had immigrated from East Germany. They were fascinated that I came from Buffalo, because they had both learned the Erie Canal song as schoolchildren. I told them about the recent excavations of the original canal.
They and most of my 14 adult students had visited Niagara Falls -- on the Canadian side. Yet none were even aware that Buffalo was near Niagara Falls, much less that the city contains museums and architecture that would have interested these artists.
Now I return home to find that they are filling in the canal. What is wrong with this picture?
