Archbishop Desmond Tutu told a crowd here that their city was a partner in destroying apartheid in his native South Africa.

"Do not underestimate what you have done," said Tutu, a Nobel Prize-winning civil rights leader who is now a visiting professor in Atlanta. He came to Birmingham on Saturday as part of an economic summit hosted by the Committee for Economic and Cultural Development.

Tutu cited an ordinance passed in Birmingham several years ago saying the city would not do business with a company that conducted business in apartheid South Africa.
